Our bamboo jersey (95% bamboo viscose) is a strong all-day option for hot climates, and modal works well for a lighter, flowing drape. Very heavy or synthetic fabrics trap heat and are best avoided in summer.

Modal is a soft, semi-natural fibre made from cellulose. It is prized for a smooth, silky hand-feel, good breathability and a fluid drape that sits neatly without constantly slipping back. It resists shrinking better than cotton and holds colour well, which makes it a popular everyday hijab fabric.

Both are soft, breathable and cellulose-based. Bamboo tends to feel more plush and cushioned with excellent moisture-wicking and natural breathability, while modal feels smoother and silkier with a lighter, more fluid drape. Bamboo is often the better pick for active, all-day or hot-weather wear; modal suits those who prefer a lightweight, elegant finish.

Opacity is a core quality standard for us. Our modal hijabs run at 130-150 GSM and our bamboo jersey uses a dense knit, both chosen to provide reliable coverage without needing to double-layer. We confirm fabric weight and opacity on every sample, and we recommend testing your palest colour first, since light shades always read more sheer than deep tones.

Jersey is the easiest fabric to keep in place. Its stretchy knit grips the head and stays put with little or no pinning, which is why it is the go-to for daily wear, work, sport and beginners. Smooth fabrics like chiffon and satin slip more and usually need an undercap and pins.

Our standard rectangular hijabs measure 180 x 70 cm, with a longer 195 cm option available on modal styles. This length gives enough fabric to style, wrap and drape comfortably for most face shapes while keeping neat coverage.

Pilling is caused by short, low-grade fibres and loose knits. Higher-grade bamboo viscose produces a smoother, longer fibre that resists pilling far better than cheap commodity jersey. To check, rub a sample against itself and wash it once — quality fabric stays smooth, weak blends fuzz quickly.

Wash cold on a gentle cycle (or by hand), ideally inside a mesh laundry bag to reduce friction. Do not wring or twist the fabric — press out water gently. Lay flat or hang to dry, and use a low-temperature iron if needed. Avoid hot water and tumble drying, which cause shrinking and fading.

Quality modal and bamboo resist shrinking and hold colour well when cared for correctly. The main causes of shrinking and fading are hot water and high-heat drying. Stick to cold water, gentle handling and air drying to keep colours true and shape intact.

Beyond fabric quality, technique matters: avoid wringing, wash inside a mesh bag, keep hijabs away from rough fabrics and Velcro in the wash, and air dry rather than tumble dry. Friction is the main cause of pilling, so gentle handling extends the life of the fabric.

Hand wash or gentle machine wash in cold water inside a laundry bag, never use hot water, and skip the tumble dryer. Hang to dry and steam or iron on low. Hot water and aggressive washing are the main reasons abayas shrink, fade or lose their drape.
